Succession
Succession in the areas directly affected by the earthquake was an example of primary succession, when all is wiped out, including soil, leaving only rock and sand, as opposed to secondary succession, where the land is all ready fertile and soil is in place. The nature of the disaster that happened, an earthquake followed by a tsunami, stirred up substrate first, loosening it, and then washing it away to another location to leave only the bare rock. Since there are many areas near the western coast of Indonesia that were not as affected, succession can start and progress naturally.
