Competition
Competition occurs when two organisms attempt to fulfill the same niche in the same area, at the same time. After competition, one organism keeps the niche, and the other is forced out. Two basic kinds of competition exist,: interspecific and intraspecific. An example of interspecific competition in Sumatra is the Orang-utan and the Proboscis Monkey, which both eat many of the same fruits. After the earthquake, the trees bearing the fruits have been thinned out, causing a shortage of food. An example of intraspecific competition among Orang-utans is fighting for mates and tree living space. Once again, after the tsunami and earthquake, trees were thinned out, causing a decrease in resources for the Orang-utans.
